church porn : : church fantasy

i was talking with some pastors one time, the majority of them were new pastors who were at the early stages of planting their respective congregations, and one of them said, “man, you can’t get caught up in church porn. it’s a dangerous thing!” now, because we are all imgaginative creatures, i want to clarify – he wasn’t refering to anything remotely close to anything sexual.

we were in a conversation about what other churches were doing. the buildings they were building. the great size of ministry they had going for them. you know, the average pastor’s fantasy. his word’s of warning and caution were very timely. i am pastor. i pastor youth. i want it be successful.

jesus’ disciples got caught looking at some church porn.

mark 13:1-2
“then as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!” and jesus answered and said to him, ‘do you see these great buildings? not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down’.”
the disciples were completely amazed at the architecture of the temple building. we don’t have temples, we have shells of buildings and grand cathedrals, amazingly large crosses displayed in contemporary ways, and relavant paint schemes that make our buildings look top notch.
there isnt’ anything wrong with church buildings, but jealousy and lust are sins. to covet what god has blessed someone else with is wrong. fantasy and porn do the same things. they create an unrealistic expectation and desire within you. god doesn’t want every expression of the body of christ to look exactly the same. he wants us to all have the same passion, heart, and purpose.
jesus’ response to the disciples was perfect. he brought it home. buildings don’t last, but the work of god in people’s hearts will.
too often, we as the body of christ (not just pastors), loose sight of the purpose of it all. a building is just that – a building. the church is more than any structure. our humanity causes us to desire for more material things than what is good for us.
church porn and fantasy can affect our hearts on deep, subtle ways. when we begin to enjoy the toys of church more than the people who are the church, we need a re-alignment. when our desire is to build building and not build up followers of christ, we need re-alignment. i don’t want to confuse the call of god’s church to be a building; cause it is people.
