musing on mullets

each day the sun rises. each night the sun sets and a new day begins. living on the east coast, it’s more frequent i get to see sun rises than sun sets…at least over a beach. one i witnessed recently was almost blinding. as i sat up in my hotel room bed, on the top floor over looking the beach, i saw a bright light that was a clear signal to me, the sun was up. i was tackled by the obvious signal of a new day. it was bold, loud, and again – obvious.

i often wish all of god’s signals were so obvious. like for instance, a season in life. perhaps its a season where you feel like you’re going up hill. you wish you just knew how big the hill really is. sometimes its easy to see when new things happen, other times we aren’t as clear. or perhaps we are just in denial of the fact that it really is over. we hold on to the ‘good ole days’ a little to long. [yes, the wife-beater mullet era IS OVER].

there was time when jesus came on the scene, and john the batist’s disciples were a little aggregated with the way jesus was doing ministry. jesus had some amazing things to say to these fellas who were obviously upset.
“Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Matthew 9:17 NKJV)
jesus was talking about his minstry and what god was doing. no one in their right mind was allow good wine to be spilled out (at least not in that area of the earth). it was crazy to think about it that way. it’s would have been as dumb as to say ‘hey, there’s my starbucks from 2 days ago…i’ll just add some new creamer and a little more coffee in it” how dare you contaminate it!!

i think god is ending a season of ministry, where over passioned prosperity/word of faith and the seeker sensitive ways are about to be old. i think god is doing something new in this generation and it’s way less consumer, safe, convenient, and powerless. i don’t think god is dismissing things of the past and seasons, but i think he longs to pour out new wine…which means perhaps we need some new bottles to hold it in. what does it look like? i’m not sure it will look any one way. but i do see the light and its getting more obvious god is starting to do something new. perhaps he’s already begun it, but like other times in life, we don’t see it – perhaps like john’s disciples, we’re to much in denial. perhaps we like our mullets too much!
